Football Club Owner Barrie Drewitt-Barlow Sexual Abuse Lawsuit
Essex Football Club Owner Faces Expanded Rape, Trafficking, and Child Sex Abuse Charges in US

Case Details
Who: Barrie Drewitt-Barlow, who spent the past year building his public profile as the new owner of Maldon & Tiptree FC in Essex, England, and was also featured as a guest on Below Deck Sailing Yacht Season 2, episodes 4–6.
What Happened:
Prosecutors allege that Barrie used his football club’s reputation, along with his homes and businesses, to target and groom teenage boys and young men. The case underscores how money, standing, and the institutions a person builds can become the very means of access to their victims.
Criminal Case (England)
- In May 2026, Essex Police raided a pub, a football stadium, and a private home in Essex, seizing a Rolls-Royce as evidence.
- Barrie has been charged with an expanded list of offenses, including multiple counts of rape, sexual assault, paying for the sexual services of a child, and sexual activity with a child.
- Prosecutors allege that Barrie targeted and groomed teenage boys and young men between 2013 and 2026, using his homes and businesses as a means of access.
Civil Lawsuit (United States)
- The Fierberg National Law Group, together with Laura Laughlin Law, PLLC, has filed a civil lawsuit against Barrie Drewitt-Barlow in the United States District Court for the District of New Jersey, on behalf of a survivor proceeding as John Doe.
- The complaint alleges that Barrie used the promise of employment—and the trappings of his wealth, status and reputation—to groom and exploit a teenage boy, beginning when the survivor was fifteen years old.
- Because Barrie has held property and business interests in the United States, and committed extensive wrongdoings in this country, survivors on this side of the Atlantic can seek accountability in an American court without waiting on a foreign prosecution or traveling abroad.
Impact
When abuse is committed by people in powerful positions with money, fame, and standing in their community, the harm is often made possible by the very institutions they build. A football club, like a school or a church, is a place where trust is assumed rather than earned, and warning signs are easy to overlook when the person doing the harm is also the person the community has decided to protect. People in positions of power may decide that protecting the institution matters more than protecting the people they had a duty to protect.
The reach of these allegations does not stop at the UK border. That a case like this can be brought in an American court is huge: it opens the door for survivors here to pursue accountability separately from any foreign criminal proceeding. Civil law in many jurisdictions allows survivors of sexual abuse to seek accountability separately from a criminal case, often under pseudonyms as the survivor in our case has done. This protects a survivor’s privacy and mental health while allowing them a measure of power in holding those responsible for their harm liable. Being made whole for what was taken from you should never depend on a criminal conviction.
