Hazing Law in Action: Max Gruver’s Family & TFNLG Attorney Jonathon Fazzola Discuss Recent Hazing Death of Southern University Student
During the Gruver family's legal proceedings, their attorney Jonathon Fazzola, who has handled numerous hazing lawsuits nationwide, shared his insights. He notes that Caleb's situation, particularly regarding witnesses providing false information about events and locations, reflects a typical pattern in comparable cases. He mentions that in certain instances, these witnesses have faced criminal charges for impeding justice. He further emphasized that this case reinforces the necessity of ongoing education, particularly among young people, about the serious consequences of hazing activities.
"While I'm not familiar with the specifics here, we commonly observe that it's not just about individual pledges proving their toughness, but also about the threat that if you don't comply with members' demands, your fellow pledges will suffer more," Fazzola explains. "These activities typically occur in secluded locations, like remote warehouses and back roads, during nighttime hours because the perpetrators generally understand that their actions are unlawful, dangerous, and inappropriate, so they actively work to keep these activities hidden from public view."
