Family of VCU Freshman, Adam Oakes, Settles Wrongful Death Lawsuit Nearly Four Years After His Tragic Hazing Death

Adam Oakes, a first-year student at Virginia Commonwealth University, received an invitation to become a member of the Delta Chi fraternity and attended the "Big Brother ceremony," on February 26, 2021. That night, Adam was pressured to consume an entire bottle of Jack Daniel's whiskey, which left him severely intoxicated. Members of the fraternity escorted Adam and fellow pledges outside to vomit on the grass, but he was unable to do so. They brought him back inside the fraternity house and abandoned him on the floor. The following morning, Adam was declared dead on the floor, with a blood-alcohol level measuring .419%. Nearly 4 years after his tragic hazing death, Delta Chi Fraternity Inc. and other defendants have agreed to pay $4.2 million to settle the wrongful death lawsuit. Our firm, along with Blankingship & Keith P.C. and Cantor Buckner Bucci P.C., is honored to have played a role in holding those responsible accountable and obtaining justice for Adam's senseless death.
