College Hockey Player Sues MSU Rival After Violent Hit Left Her Unconscious on the Ice

A former Adrian College women’s hockey player is suing a Michigan State University rival for what she called a violent, banned bodycheck that caused her to hit the ice and lose consciousness. Traverse City attorney Bailor Bell, with The Fierberg National Law Group, which handles sports-injury cases, is not associated with lawsuit but said that lawsuits against athletic opponents are rare. Plaintiffs have to meet a high burden. They have to show that the harm resulted from activity beyond the risk that is normally associated with the sport, he said. “The issue is, can they show the conduct exceeded the normal bounds typically associated with the activity?” Bell said. “Does this rise to the level of reckless conduct?”
