9 Accused of 2021 Hazing Death of Phat Nguyen at Michigan State University

On November 20, 2021, at 413 Stoddard Ave., East Lansing police responded to a report of a subject down, unconscious and not breathing, police said in a probable-cause affidavit. Phat Nguyen was pronounced dead at the scene. An autopsy showed that Nguyen died of “acute ethanol toxicity,” with a blood-alcohol level of 0.386, according to The Fierberg National Law Group, which is representing his family. “The principal aim of the ‘blackout’ event was to get the pledges, including Phat, as drunk as possible as fast as possible so they would blackout or ‘die’ and be ‘reborn’ as members of the fraternity."
