While Chico State makes all Greek life members attend seminars on the dangers of hazing, an investigation by the Chico State’s Office of Student Conduct, Rights, and Responsibilities, found the Chico State Delta Chi chapter fraternity had violated its zero-hazing policy after forcing a pledge to drink a bottle of alcohol, then exercise.

Chico State has a tumultuous history in regards to hazing. Greek life was temporarily suspended in 2012 after the overdose death of student Mason Sumnicht in 2012. Seven years earlier, the university made national headlines after the hazing death of Chico State student Matthew Carrington, which led to “Matt’s law,” legislation that strengthened hazing penalties around the state
